Supergirl is a comic book super heroine that is depicted as Superman’s female counterpart. She was included in several comic books not related to Superman and even starred in her own comic books series which ran from 1972 to 1974. There are several characters who took up the Supergirl alter ego. The most notable were Linda Danvers and Kara Zor-El. The comic book series with Linda Danvers as Supergirl was cancelled in 1985, but DC Comics reintroduced Supergirl as Kara Zor-El.
This version of Supergirl was said to be Superman’s cousin and was the daughter of Superman’s uncle. She is actually older than Superman, but she was stuck in suspended animation and arrived in Earth much later than Superman and by then he was already about 35 years old while she was still 16. She eventually adopted the Supergirl costume and accepts the name as well. Just like Superman, she also has the same powers that he has, including super strength, speed and flight.
She is also featured in the modern animated series, Justice League Unlimited where she fights together with Superman and other members of the Justice League. In the series, she is very close to Superman where they are almost like siblings.
