There are very few people, let alone superheroes, who can keep up with the “Scarlet Speedster”, known to many by his one-word monicker: Flash. Known for his increadible speed and agility that seem to violate laws of physics, the Flash was the headline character during the Silver age of comics in the 1950’s. More recently, with the syndication of cartoons such as Justice League and Justice League: Unlimited, the Flash has rekindled his popularity with the young and old alike.
Though known most for his ability to move at incredible speeds, very few people know that there were actually several people who reprised the role of the Flash. The very first one was embodied by Jay Garrick, a college student who acquired his powers from inhaling heavy water vapors. During the Silver age of Comics, the role of the Flash was given to Barry Allen, a police scientist who acquired his super speed when a batch of chemicals that spilled over him was struck by lightning. His grandson, Bart Allen, also played the role as the Flash for a short period. Recently, the character of Wally West as the Flash is the most known reprisal of the character.
Aside from his uncanny speed, the Flash also has the ability to vibrate his molecules at high speeds to be able to pass through walls, think and react at superhuman speeds, and travel through time. Further, several versions of the Flash costume have been made during different eras, the most well-known being the red suit sporting a lightning bolt in the middle of the chest.
