The Beast was one of the original characters from the X-men comics back in September 1963. Through the years, his appearance has undergone salient transformations, including his trademark blue fur, heightened senses and cat-like features such as pointed ears, fangs and claws. Once known as mild-mannered Dr. Henry Philip McCoy, the Beast is a world-renowned biochemist and genetic engineer.

Born in Dundee, Illinois, exposure to intense nuclear radiation may have triggered Beast’s animalistic features. His abilities, however, became more manifest only during his adolescant years, giving him greater strength and agility. Acting on the animosity he felt from fellow students and non-mutants, Beast accepted an offer to study in Charles Xavier’s School for Gifted Youngsters. It was here where Beast was able to study fields such as calculus and Renaissance literature in peace, while honing his skills to their utmost potential.

Although a lot of people know Beast for his time with the X-Men, not a lot of people know that he joined several factions as well. He also joined the Avengers and the Defenders before going back to the X-Men. But be that as it may, it was during his tenure in the X-Men where he became most known, even landing a role in the cartoon spin-offs of the X-Men such as The Uncanny X-Men and X-Men: Evolution, as well as video games by parent company Marvel.
