Batman is one of the most well-known superhero of all times. Both young and old will no doubt know who Batman is when asked since he has been around since his first appearance in 1939 and until now is still very widely popular.

Batman is the the crime-fighting alter ego of millionaire playboy, industrialist and philantropist Bruce Wayne. When he was young, he witnessed the muder of his parents and since then he has sworn to fight crime in Gotham City. He trained himself physically and intellectually and created a bat-themed costume that he wears which is said to strike fear into the hearts of the criminals that he fights. Unlike other superheroes who have superpowers, Batman relies more on his fighting skills, gadgets and intellect to fight criminals and villains. He is also well-known for fighting crime together with his sidekick Robin also known as the Boy Wonder.

Since his first appearance in the 30s, Batman has been portrayed differently throughout the years. The earlier versions of Batman portrayed him as a respectable, model citizen who lived in a bright, colorful environment. This continued throughout the years until the more modern versions of Batman where he was portrayed more as a “Dark Knight”.

Because of his popularity, Batman has instantly become a pop culture icon.
